Bear Dog

Moving to a new house is stressful for anyone but for a dog especially an older dog this could cause a major stress for him. So how do you house train puppy or an older dog when you move into a new home?
If your dog is an adult dog you may think house training would be easier as your adult dog would hopefully already be house trained? However, due to the stress of moving you may find your old dog needs some reminders on its house training! This can cause so much added strain for you as the owner if you do not plan. Whilst you are planning the move to your new home, house training your dog should be a major part of this.
Crate Training Older dogs
You may have some experience of crate training dogs previously and be aware of how to crate train a dog or puppy. If you still have your dog crate than you will need to use this as your older dog will find this as their refuge during the upheaval going on around them. By returning to its crate your older dog will quickly be a able to orientate itself to the new home and be less likely to soil in the house. However, if you are too stressed then your dog will sense this and may soil in an effort to ‘mark its territory’.
Crate Training Schedule
If your dog does soil inside the house then return to the beginnings of your crate training and keep your dog inside its crate along with some of its favorite toys and a blanket perhaps? You will then take your dog out of its crate frequently to take it outside to poo and pee. A dog will not willingly soil in its own bed so by keeping your older dog in its crate for only an hour or so at a time before allowing it outside to pee you will quickly ‘re-train’ your dog. It is not so much teaching old dog new tricks as reminding him of some old habits!
Crate Train Puppies – Successfully
For a new puppy in a new house the same regime should be followed. Always be aware that if you are stressed about something your puppy will sense this and your efforts to house train a puppy will become prolonged. Have a crate in as quiet a place in the house as you can find. Have a soft blanket and some toys in the crate and keep your puppy inside if for up to an hour or so. Never lock your puppy inside the crate alone for more than an hour at a time. After an hour take your puppy out of the crate and show him where in your garden or yard he may pee/poo. If you use praise at all times as a reward rather than chastising you will find your new puppy will be house trained within a few days or a week.
